We purchase and sell Israeli shekels, please remember that only the banknotes presented on the website can be exchanged with us. The origins of the shekel date back to 1980, when it replaced the Israeli lira, also known as the Israeli pound sterling, as a reminder of British influence in the region. In 1985, the denomination of 1,000 old shekels was equivalent to 1 new shekel. Important: two interchangeable abbreviations are commonly used for this currency: ILS (Israel Shekel) and NIS (New Israel Shekel). Israels currency maintains a close link to the US dollar because the United States is its main military and economic ally - especially now that the war with Hamas has broken out.
