The won is the official means of payment in South Korea, its history dates back to 1910, although during the period of Japanese colonization, the Korean yen was used, which was the equivalent of the Japanese yen. In 1945, after the end of World War II, Korea was divided into two separate countries: North Korea and South Korea, each of which introduced its own currency.
